Eras Outfits: 1989

Our fifth era is 1989, and thanks to Taylor’s move to New York we see a lot of her street style and another shift in her fashion. She wears more crop tops with high waisted bottoms, jumpsuits with cut-outs, bold colors, and color blocking. As always, the outfits will be listed from least to most expensive.

One of Taylor’s tour outfits was a faux leather black jumpsuit with cut outs. Here I found a similar one at a very affordable price point. Pair it with some ankle boots and you have yourself a simple 1989 era outfit.

A memorable award show look Taylor wore during the 1989 era was a white jumpsuit with cut outs. Here I found one that invokes a similar look and paired it with some equally dynamic heels.

Taking inspiration from Taylor’s street style at the time we see a lot of matching sets of crop tops and high waisted bottoms often worn with boldly colored heels. Here I found a cute black and white set and paired it with teal heels.

For another street style inspired look, I found a more boldly colored set and paired it with neutral heels.

In my mind, Taylor’s most memorable awards show outfit is an orange and fuchsia color blocked look she wore to the Grammy’s. Here I put together a strikingly similar, yet surprisingly affordable look by pairing together a faux leather strapless top with a silky maxi skirt. When pairing together two different colors like this it is important that they be tonally similar or it will not work. To complete this look I’ve paired it with a short statement necklace and some strappy gold heels.

Throughout this tour, Taylor wore a number of shiny sets with matching boots in a handful of different colors. Here I found a pink one and paired it with some boots that are admittedly not the best match, but still very much encompass the 1989 era.

For another shiny set and matching boot combo, I found this silver one and paired it with some fun platform boots.

For the last of the shiny sets I found this one that is probably the most similar in silhouette to what Taylor wore on tour. I’m using these black ankle boots again for a more comfortable matching shoe option.

Here we are taking inspiration from what I think of as Taylor’s second most memorable 1989 tour outfit, I white set worn with black over the knee boots. I couldn’t find a matching white set, so I paired this corset top with these petite high waisted shorts for a similar look. Wear with these black over the knee boots to complete your 1989 era look.

Once again we have another tour opening look for our final show-stopping outfit. Here we have what I believe to be Taylor’s most memorable 1989 look as inspiration, a black cut out crop top worn with a shimmery high waist skirt, sequin jacket, and ankle boots. I found a super similar crop top and paired it with this green satin skirt (she wears a number of different colored skirts with this look throughout the tour), a sequin bomber jacket, and some simple ankle boots. Nothing could be more 1989 era than this.
